Obesity not a contraindication to knee replacement (Reuters)

Reuters - Obese individuals with arthritic knees should not be denied knee replacement surgery, researchers conclude, based on a new study showing that obese patients benefit from the surgery almost as much as their normal-weight peers.

When you walk into a supplement store or browse through a supplement website... there are thousands of competing brands of protein powder. I bet you wonder... the same as I do... what is the difference between all of these protein powders and which one is the best one for me?

First of all, know this... there are different kinds of protein powders. The main ingredient can be whey, milk, egg or even soy.

And then you can break these down some more...

You have your whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, hydrolyzed whey, calcium caseinate, egg white, whole egg and on and on. Enough to make your head dizzy, huh?

That is why I'm here looking out for you today with this brand new, spankin' article...

The next obvious question about protein powders is what EXACTLY is the benefits you can get from all these different, somewhat unpronounceable forms of protein?

Boy, I'm glad you asked... because I didn't want to say anything...

Let's start off with Whey protein powder. It is comprised of twenty percent of the total milk protein. a by-product of cheese manufactured from cow's milk. It has lots of amino acids and is easy for your body to digest.

The next protein that I want to talk about is the Casein protein which makes up about eighty percent of the total milk protein. It too has an excellent amino acid profile, just like the whey protein but it takes longer for your body to digest. In short, during your workout and right afterwards, casein protein is not a good idea because your body needs extra protein NOW... not later. You need a protein that can be absorbed faster by your body...

I have to warn you... I'm not a big fan of soy based proteins. It is a controversial subject for many folks. There are many researches that suggest soy products can be a medical risk. I would suggest that you choose another source of protein and stay away from soy powders.

There is another source of protein powders that is a blend. Usually it is a combination of the whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, egg protein, casein protein and sometimes soy protein. Blends are good when you want a full spectrum of proteins that can be digested by your body over a period of time.

My experience from the supplement stores is that most of the whey protein powders are mostly made of whey concentrate mixed with a small portion of whey isolate. And the reason for that is called, keeping the cost down. You see, whey isolate is more pure and higher quality source of protein than the whey concentrated. Also, whey isolate has less fat.

So the supplement manufacturers mix them together to get a better source of protein and less fat than if they just sold their brand as whey concentrate.

Now, whey isolate gives you the highest yield of protein that you can get from milk. However, the additional expense may not necessarily guarantee it is going to give you bigger muscles. Therefore, I would conclude that the additional expense of getting whey isolate powder may not justify the added cost.

Here is what I recommend that you do:

Since Whey protein is quickly absorbed by your body, use this source before you workout, right after you workout (up to 6 hours) or when you wake up from a night's sleep because your body needs protein NOW.

The slower digested proteins, casein protein would be good to ingest anytime of the day except the times above for the whey protein. Your body isn't in a rush and having a constant supply of protein is good for maintaining your muscles.

If you have to use a blend of proteins which has both, whey protein and casein protein -- use this cheaper version of protein powder 6 hours after you finish working out.

Protein powders can also be used as a meal replacement drinks but keep in mind that your body wasn't designed to drink it's meals. Try to focus on good nutrition and eat good quality protein meats, good carbs and good fats several times a day. It's OK to use protein drinks as a supplement but try not to use it as an permanent meal replacement...

Combining both the protein shakes plus eating a full spectrum of good quality foods would be the best way to support your muscle growth.

One more thing... I don't like ingesting artificial sweeteners. And a lot of protein powders have them in their list of ingredients. For some of you, artificial sweeteners may have adverse affect on your body such as headaches and painful jaws. If this is you, you would best be served to look a little harder because some of the bigger supplement suppliers on the Internet carries brands of protein powder without the artificial flavors, colors and sweeteners. There is very little price difference. But then again, that is up to you...

Now grow some muscles...

People With GERD More Likely to Develop Asthma (HealthDay)

HealthDay - FRIDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) -- The first evidence linkinggastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and asthma has been discovered byDuke University Medical Center researchers.

Americans spent billions of dollars last year on natural remedies. But with so many different products to choose from in the aisles of your local health food store, how do you know which ones are worth buying and which ones you should avoid. Its important to note that there are many vitamin and nutritional supplements that can work wonders for your health however if you make the wrong choice, you may cause yourself irreparable damage. Before you make any long term decisions about your health, take a moment and discover these 3 amazing secrets related to supplements.

Stunning Secret # 1 The difference between a nutritional supplement and a drug.

Stunning Secret # 2 The implications of taking supplements while also taking prescription drugs.

Stunning Secret # 3 The importance of taking only name brand supplements from approved sources.

The Difference Between a Nutritional Supplement and a Drug

In many cases, there is not much of a difference. Both substances can have extremely powerful effects and cause problems if taken incorrectly. A key element is how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) view them. For the most part, the FDA treats supplements as if they were foods. They are technically defined as products taken by mouth that contain an ingredient intended to supplement the diet. Drugs on the other hand are legally defined as substances intended to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease. Because of this definition, most supplements get as much attention from the FDA as a package of throat lozenges.

The Implications of Taking Both Prescription Drugs and Supplements

Be very careful because some supplements interfere with prescription medications or cause dangerous side effects when taken with prescription drugs. The simple solution to avoid this danger is to always consult your doctor before taking any supplements even if you think they are harmless. You should also discontinue use of supplements if you are scheduled for any invasive medical procedure. Studies have found that certain supplements interfere with anesthesia, can cause excessive bleeding or elevate blood pressure.

The Importance of Taking Only Brand Name Supplements

One myth that has run wild is that supplements are safer than prescription drugs because they are thought to be natural and chemical free. Unfortunately research has not shown this to be true across the board. Many independent tests have found that some supplements were contaminated with potentially harmful ingredients such as pesticides, bacteria and heavy metals. More recently, Consumer Reports tests found that labels on supplement bottles did not contain what they said nor was the dosage information correct. According to their research, a good strategy is to rely on more well known companies like GNC or vitamin shoppe over lesser known brands. These and other better known brands appear to have more consistent quality and safety.

In light of your new found knowledge, the question you may wonder where you can find reliable information about supplements. The irony is that most of what you will find on the internet or from the grocery store clerk is not the most reliable source of information. To start you in the right direction, consider the following sources. (National Institutes of Health and Food and Drug Administration)

So the next time that you have heartburn, you will be probably right in thinking that it is due to something that you ate.

The following guidelines for a diet is based on the assumption that generally speaking there are some foods that are safe to eat and some not for people susceptible to attacks of heartburn. What is of importance to us is naturally the latter. What you know is safe is fine but coming across food accidentally without what effect eating it could have on you can be disastrous.

Given below is a list of foods to avoid if you want to avoid heartburn. If you have stoked up on these in your pantry, it is advisable that you get rid of them fast.

Fatty foods

What this translates into is simply this. You cannot have the luxury of nice juicy steaks with cheese toppings and fries to go with. To be on the safe side, it is best that you avoid all places of temptation such as fast food chains, including burger stands, pizza places and doughnut shops. It may not be easy, but better be safe than sorry!

Dairy Products

Citrus Fruits and Citrus Juices

Unlike the other two groups of heartburn foods to avoid, unless you are obsessed with citrus fruit and their juices or prefer buy bulk ginkgo biloba leaf portions of grape fruit for break fast, this is not such a big ban. Moderation is advised for they are acidic and as we have seen more acid equals more discomfort.

Acidic and Spicy Foods

Foods such as tomatoes, cranberries, red peppers and other spicy produce are best avoided as they are acidic and can result in attacks of heartburn.

This list is not exhaustive. Depending on one's constitution, for some these may not trigger heartburn while for others they may best be avoided as a natural remedy for heartburn. By trial and error, one comes to know which ones to avoid and which not to as being quite safe. The list while not being exhaustive, covers the most common triggers of heartburn. This is as good as a starting point as any for those looking for diet as a natural remedy for heartburn.

Researchers Find Link Between Organ Transplants, Cancer (HealthDay)

When you receive the Seal you will begin to control what you eat. New York City is reviving efforts to try to help by requiring restaurants to post the calorie-count of their meals on the menu.

Around 1 in 10 restaurants in New York City is a fast-food restaurant of a big chain. New York wants to require these restaurants to post their calorie-counts right on the menu where the buyers can see what they are buying.

Last September a federal judge would buy bulk glycocyamine allow the plan to go forward because it did not include also other restaurants in the city. But the New York City Board of Heath is planning to revive the measure January 22, 2008.

This measure would require fast-food companies to display the amount of calories in meals on the menu board in big enough print that people can see how many calories are in a potential meal.

Big fast-food chains like McDonald's know how many calories are in all their food and they do make that information available to the public but they do not warn buyers by posting it on the menu boards.

Fast-food meals are notorious for containing huge amounts of calories. A single meal can contain 1000s of calories, even meeting or exceeding the amount of calories a person needs in the whole day.

And that is just from the single meal which offers poor nutrition. A diet largely consisting of fast food does not offer the kind of nutrition needed to keep a person healthy and even alive.

NYC officials are hoping to address the problem of obesity by making people more aware of what each meal is doing to them. These meals have not enough nutrition to qualify as one meal but have enough calories to cover the whole day.

NYC also outlawed trans fats in cooking oils from all the restaurants in the city in 2007. Trans fats are the worst kind of fat you can possible eat, made by altering natural fats artificially.

The New York Restaurant Association is the culprit that sued NYC because of the measure in 2007. That was why a federal judge decided that the law had to be changed to become acceptable.

If NYC changes the requirement so restaurants who have not volunteered their calorie counts are also included in the requirement, then the judge from last year would consider it an acceptable requirement.

When you are sealed you will start to change your diet. You will take steps to lose the extra weight. And you will not do it because you just want to look better. It will change the way you feel and is likely to extend your life.

Calorie restriction has often been proven in tests on animals to lengthen their lifespan. It takes a lot of self-discipline to restrict calories. And that self-discipline is often lacking in Americans.

But usually when people eat too much they do not truly enjoy their food. So you will find it easier to cut calories than you first think, because when you start eating less you will start to also enjoy your food more.

When you are sealed you will learn to enjoy food because you will be thankful for what God has given you. And even more than the food itself you will enjoy how much better you feel from eating less food that is healthier food.

When you are sealed God will write His Name upon you. Then you will belong to God. And He will give you the ability to nurse yourself back to health by cutting calories when you receive the Seal.

Third of Elderly Patients Take Companion to See Doctor (HealthDay)

HealthDay - TUESDAY, July 15 (HealthDay News) -- More than one-third ofelderly patients on Medicare take a companion with them for routinemedical visits.

One of the most common questions anyone who wants to go on a diet or simply maintain their current weight asks is does alcohol make you fat? This article provides an answer to this question, so read it to the end.

The problem with alcohol and fat is that alcohol contains a great deal of sugar and is calorie rich. This sugar quickly turns to fat inside our body. That alcohol induced fat clings to our belly, thighs, arms, and all body parts. The common assumption that alcohol somehow affects belly fat more than on any part of the body is false. Each person has his or her own genetic makeup. This alone determines the body parts which are more prone to accumulate fat.

Overall, men gain more weight in the abdomen, so it's likely that alcohol would cause belly fat for men. But it's not different from any other fatty food. Women mostly add fat in the pelvic area, so alcohol will not cause a massive accumulation of belly fat for them. However, it will still add more fat overall.

Because alcohol is calorie and sugar rich, and because it doesn't make you less hungry, it's detrimental to weight loss. One of the things it can hurt more than anything is an effort to get a flat stomach or six pack abs, since that requires an overall low body fat percentage.

Alcohol makes you fat only if you pure bulk spirulina nutritional supplement too much of it. If you want to lose body fat, I recommend that you cut down on your alcohol intake. I'm not suggesting to cut it out entirely. You're still entitled to enjoy yourself. But cut it down to 1-2 drink when you go out. That should be enough to enjoy yourself but still keep your body fat down.

Death Rates for HIV Patients Decrease Dramatically (HealthDay)

HealthDay - TUESDAY, July 1 (HealthDay News) -- Death rates for HIV-infectedpeople lucky enough to get their hands on antiretroviral medications havedecreased dramatically since the introduction of these drugs in 1996, newBritish research shows.

Do you take a vitamin/mineral supplement? How did you choose your brand? Is there a chance that it could be man made or even worse be synthetic, made in a beaker or flask or do you even know? Paracelsus, the father of Pharmacology once stated, "Everything man needs to sustain health is provided by God and nature, and it's the job of science to find it"

As Dr. Roger Williams, past president of the American Chemical Society wrote in his book, Nutrition Against Disease. "The human body heals itself and nutrition provides the resources to accomplish the task." Therefore, the nutrients themselves do not have drug-like effects. They can only support human physiology.

The most important nutrients are the ones you are missing. 'It is not what your doctor knows, it's what he doesn't know that could kill you, with all the advancements in research and development and technology.

As consumers have become more educated on these basic facts, they have, at their own expense, begun to integrate dietary supplements into their overall health strategy. Not, as statistics show, as an alternative to there doctors advice or recommended care, but as a complimentary and more holistic approach to their quest for better health.

Today's society is becoming more aware that optimal health is most important in their lives even more so than wealth. More and more people are supplementing their diets to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

People need to be responsible for their own well being and for the people around them that they truly love and care about but it looks like people wait for the sickness to occur then they run to the doctors office or worse to clog up the emergency rooms at the hospitals. We need to start to be proactive and start looking at prevention long before the symptoms start to buy bulk niacin niacinamide USP powder The doctors of today don't deal with the solutions to the persons problems with toxic pharmaceuticals they just mask the symptoms, the root of the problem still lingers in the body just waiting for the opportunity to strike again.

How did people live before the very first pharmaceutical drug was ever made??? They lived off Gods nutrients provided in his plants and his soils which have become impotent in nutrients and in phytochemicals. The pioneers of those days never ran to the doctors or the hospitals because they weren't built back then, so why is it that modern society does the opposite and at the first sign of a runny nose or a little sniffle they take off to see the doctor why?? Because we as a nation don't know any better.

This is were proper nutrition and education are about what proper nutrition is. There has been a new discovery and technology in the science field called GLYCOBIOLOGY. The study of glyconutrients this is the new wave of the future in medical breakthroughs, nothing in the past 100 years has impacted the human body or the physiology make up of the bodies ability to correct the health problem from within.

Glyconutrients are the answer that your body is in desperate need of, to perform its everyday functions at the cellular level.

Newest fertility treatment may be a diet (Reuters)

Buying health insurance as a family is like sitting around the coffee table putting a puzzle together. But instead of one possible outcome, the pieces can fit together to make an album of finished puzzle pictures. The strategy, however, is no different. The key to completing the puzzle is to find the corner pieces or flat-sided pieces so you can fill buy bulk choline bitartrate the middle accordingly.

The corner pieces to your health insurance puzzle represent the make-up of your family. How many members are there and what is your budget? A Family Health Insurance plan can start with just two people. It is very common for a party of two or more to purchase a "Family" health insurance policy assuming their will be value-added benefits in terms of cost and coverage. In fact, the opposite is usually true. The overall benefits might be greater when you split the plan up if your family has three or less members.

Often times a family policy for two people can cost more in monthly premium than two separate policies combined. Plus, the deductibles and limits per person don't change. A family of three will be somewhat similar. A family can really start to save money on purchasing a plan together when there are four or more members because the monthly premium stays the same after three family members and the combined yearly deductible can decrease.

The flat-sided pieces to your puzzle represent the needs of each family member. Some health insurance plans are more appropriate for males and others are more appropriate for females. Plans that don't include maternity benefits can cost much less in monthly premium, often have low or NO deductibles, and can usually only be purchased by an individual. Some of these plans are even appropriate for women because they have an "escape clause" that allows the member to slide into a high-deductible maternity plan should she become pregnant.

How does your puzzle look now? It is time to fill in the middle and complete your puzzle. The final piece to this puzzle is your health insurance agent. Your puzzle's picture can change from year to year and your agent's job is to help you solve it.

Treating blood pressure may help prevent dementia (Reuters)

Volunteer parish nurse Joanie Friend of the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church takes the blood pressure of elderly patient Hazel Sears at Sears' home in Bethesda, Maryland, September 21, 2007. (Jim Bourg/Reuters)Reuters - Treating high blood pressure in the very elderly may help reduce their risk of developing dementia, researchers said on Monday.

I was recently looking at my supplement stash and realized I hardly have anything. I mean, here's what I've got: Vanilla Creme Muscle Milk, Vanilla Whey protein powder, Creatine, Glutamine, Vitamin D, Fish Oil, and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid). After I was shocked by how little in the way of supplementation I had (I arginine pyroglutamate nutritional powder even take a multi-vitamin or fat burner like all the muscle mag bodybuilding shills tell me to). Quite simply, though, what I've got is all I need. While I pondered upon that I got to remembering how I never used to be a purest, meaning I used to have all kinds of supplements that I'd try. I wouldn't even research before I bought. I'd read in a bodybuilding forum or website that such and such will do wonders for gains, or here's what you can look like after taking such and such for this short period of time. I'd be seduced by the before and after shots of guys who supposedly took this such and such supplement. I was training hard but, of course, I was looking for help in achieving more gains. I'd go out to the popular vitamin store chains looking for the latest and greatest supplement, buy it, try it, and then read, oh, it even works better if you stack it with this other supplement, which by the way, we also manufacture. So, I'd get on a supplement buying binge and then $200 or $300 later I'd find out that, yeah I maybe did make some progress but maybe I could have made those gains simply through doing what I've always been doing - training heavy and hard and going all out in the gym.

Pick up any muscle magazine at your local bookstore and count how many pages are devoted to supplement ads, and then compare that number to the number of actual training articles (minus the stupid female bodybuilder/swimsuit articles and centerfold pull outs they now insert to get guys to buy this crap). I'll bet you will have counted more advertisements than actual helpful, relevant articles. Why would the magazines carry all those advertisements??? Obviously, to seduce you into buying their crappy magazine, crappy and expensive supplements, and to make you poor! Yep, the magazine publishers make most of their magazine revenue by selling advertising space, not from you buying the magazine. And, another thing. Take a look at the articles they publish. If you have some magazines handy you might want to do a little comparison among a few of them. Can you identify a common theme??? I certainly can. They tend to all have the same types of articles from one issue to the next. You might see cover page headlines like: 'Build Massive Quads', 'Huge Arm Training', 'Get Ripped For The Summer', or some derivation thereof. These, of course, are to get you to buy the magazine. You could read every article published in today's issues of the latest muscle mags on the market and pretty much find that information in past issues of the same magazine (or for free on the internet). I mean, come on, how many articles does it take to tell you how to grow your biceps??? So, don't waste anymore of your money enriching the lives of the magazine publishing families.

Ok, back to my main point of how to become a supplement purest. As I mentioned in my story above I wasn't always a purest in this regard. I tried a lot of supplements, but they were just that, a replacement for hard work in the gym - A crutch to rely on thinking I could slack off in the gym as long as I have my full range of vitamins, pills, whatever. You want to have your basics like those I listed in the beginning of this post. You'll want creatine for muscular energy and explosive power, glutamine for faster recovery and energy, vitamin D, CLA for fat burning acceleration, muscle mass building and retention, and fish oil for, again, muscle building and retention and fat loss. You may already have these, may need to get some, or have your own set of supplements that you feel are tried and trued according to your standards and results achieved. If so, by all means continue doing what you're doing if its working for you and you're not going broke trying to keep up with the latest product to hit the market. The point is to get the maximum amount of results with whatever supplements you feel work for you. I find these, in combination, work the best for me. I hope they do the same for you.

Medicare proposes changes for imaging, dialysis (Reuters)

Reuters - The U.S. government proposed payment changes in the Medicare health insurance program on Monday that could impact reimbursement of medical imaging, diagnostic testing and dialysis providers.

Is there really a natural remedy for joint pain out there and is there really a natural remedy for arthritis? If there are, what should those remedies include? Here are a few suggestions.

It is fair to say that there is no single prescription drug that can achieve the wide ranging impact that high-quality glucosamine can. Glucosamine is naturally manufactured in the body and scientists know that this simple substance is found in relatively high concentrations in the joints and connective tissues, where its function is to repair cartilage and maintain joint mobility. As some clinical researchers have described it, it is simply "remarkable". Glucosamine methylsulfonylmethane MSM supplement in rebuilding the cartilage blocking the "bad" enzymes that destroy cartilage, activates the lipids, fibrin, thrombi and blood vessels in the surrounding joint areas and accelerates the production of hyaluronan which acts as a lubricant in the joint fluids.

Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Devil's Claw in treating joint conditions like osteoarthritis, fibrositis, rheumatoid arthritis and small joint disease. It has also been scientifically proven to assist in the treatment of lower back pain. In a study by Brady et al, (1981), serum cholesterol and uric acid levels were shown to be reduced after treatment with Devil's Claw. Scientific studies have also indicated that it is effective in stimulating the lymphatic system to increase resistance against disease.

Boswellia has been used for thousands of years as a natural anti-inflammatory. Modern science has verified that boswellic acids contained within the herb can block the formation of leukotrienes, the immune cells responsible for inflammation, while also promoting the formation of free radicals. With regular use, blood supply to the joints is also maintained, keeping soft tissue nourished and viable. Many studies and reports have shown that boswellic acids have an anti-inflammatory action -much like the conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for inflammatory conditions. Boswellia inhibits the inflammatory causatives in the body, such as leukotrienes, but unlike NSAIDs long-term use of boswellia does not appear to cause irritation or ulceration of the stomach.

JointEase Plus contains 100% pure Harpagophytum Procumbens, also known as Devil's Claw because of the claw-like shape of its fruit. For thousands of years, the Khoisan people of the Kalahari Desert (in Southern Africa) have used Devil's Claw to treat painful joint conditions and other health problems. JointEase Pluscombines Devil's Claw with Glucosamine sulphate and Boswellia serata, making it one of the most effective natural joint pain remedies on the market today.

AP - Magic Johnson's normally publicity-shy wife Cookie is emerging as a spokeswoman in a campaign urging black women to get tested for HIV.

Many of us have already heard about natural health supplements like Omega-3, and today it is breaking ground with its natural ability to help in healing. How? In recent studies, Omega-3 fish oil was tested and has shown to act as a natural preventative and aid for a number of mental health problems.

First, a little background on omega-3 fatty acids: Found in fish oil and other food sources, these acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are nutritionally essential. This natural health supplement includes a-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Some of the many natural health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids include reduced risk of coronary heart disease, improved blood circulation, blood pressure reduction, and help in relieving depression and anxiety, among other health conditions.

The good news is that we can obtain natural health macronutrients like omega-3 through common food sources. Seafood - including clams, mussels, anchovies, herring, mackerel, salmon, and sardines are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed oil also contains omega-3 acids; as do kiwifruit, black raspberry, walnuts, pecans, hazel nuts, and eggs.

Because natural health supplements like omega-3 fatty acids are known to enhance membranes in brain cells, its no wonder researchers have taken an in-depth look into its effectiveness at helping individuals who suffer from a number of mental health disorders. For example, a preliminary double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids on bipolar disorder found that patients who not only tolerated the fatty acids well, but demonstrated improvement in the mental health condition of the patient.

Omega-3, one of the natural health nutrients of the new millennium has now been shown to have benefits in the prevention of schizophrenia. After a study (Schizophrenia Daily News Blog) conducted in Australia, participants who had displayed early signs of the disease were given fish oil for three months. Findings demonstrated that natural health treatments like omega-3 fish oil could be beneficial in preventing schizophrenia on patients who are at risk for developing the mental health condition.

In general, omega-3 fatty acids are truly a natural health benefit to any one wanting to maintain a healthy and well-balanced life. For those of us who may be at risk or are suffering from common health issues, it is proving to be a vital dose of daily nutrition.

Mental Test Spots Alzheimer's Risk (HealthDay)

HealthDay - TUESDAY, July 1 (HealthDay News) -- A new questionnaire may helpin both diagnosing older adults facing dementia and also in identifyingindividuals who need help with daily living.

Brigham tea, cao ma huang (Chinese ephedra), desert herb, desert tea, E. shennungiana, E. sinica, ephedrine, epitonin, joint fir, mahuang, mahuuanggen (root), Mexican tea, Mormon tea, muzei mu huang (Mongolian ephedra), popotillo, sea grape, squaw tea, teamster's tea, yellow astringent, yellow horse, zhong ma huang

Ephedra, or ephedrine, is derived from the crude extracts of the root and aerial parts of E. sinica and E. shennungiana; other forms include E. nevadensis, E. trifurca, E. equisetina, and E. distachya. Ephedrine has been used medicinally as a stimulant and for the management of bronchial disorders. It is believed that the various members of this genus were used more than 5,000 years ago by the Chinese to treat asthma. Ephedra has been used in Asian medicine to treat colds and flu, fevers, chills, headaches, edema, lack of perspiration, nasal congestion, aching joints and bones, coughing and wheezing. Today, ephedra continues to find a place in herbal preparations designed to relieve cold symptoms and to improve respiratory function.

The primary active ingredient of ephedra extract is ephedrine, although extracts generally contain between 0.5% and 2.5% of alkaloids of the 2-aminophenylpropane type, including ephedrine, methylephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norephedrine, and norpseudoephedrine. Similar to the structurally related drug amphetamine, ephedrine acts by directly stimulating the sympathomimetic system and the central nervous system (CNS, alpha and beta agonists), possibly increasing heart rate, myocardial contraction, peripheral vasoconstriction with associated elevations in blood pressure, bronchodilation, and mydriasis. Ephedrine is active when given orally, parenterally, or ophthalmic ally.

Other components in ephedra extracts include volatile oils, catechins, gallic acid, tannins, flavonoids, inulin, dextrin, starch, and pectin. Ephedra is available as capsules, tablets, teas, and tinctures, in combination products such as Chromemate, Escalation, Excel, Herbal Ecstasy, Herbal Fen-Phen, Herbalife, Metabolife, and Power Trim.

Reported uses

Ephedra is used to treat respiratory tract diseases with mild bronchospasm. Although it's been in use by conventional practitioners since the 1930s to treat asthma, it has become less popular as more specific beta agonists have become available. Ephedra is also used as a cardiovascular stimulant. Pseudoephedrine remains a common ingredient in many OTC cough and cold preparations. It's also used to treat other conditions, including chills, coughs, colds, flu, fever, headaches, edema, and nasal congestion, and as an appetite suppressant. The alkaloid-free North American species is used to treat venereal disease.

Ma huang was traditionally used by Chinese herbalists during the early stages of respiratory infections and also for the short-term treatment of certain kinds of asthma, eczema, hay fever, narcolepsy, and edema. However, ma huang was not supposed to be taken for an extended period of time, and people with less than robust constitutions were warned to use only low doses or to avoid ma huang altogether.

Administration

Oral use: Adults, 15 to 30 mg total alkaloid, calculated as ephedrine, every 6 to 8 hours for a total maximum daily dose of 300 mg/ day; children older than age 6, 0.5 mg total alkaloid/kg; recommended daily dose, 2 mg

Tea: 1 to 4 g by mouth three times a day

Tincture (1:1): Medium single dose 5 g by mouth

Safety Risk The FDA prohibits the sale of ephedra in quantities of 8 mg or more per dose, and advises individuals to take less than 8 mg every 6 hours, and no more than 24 mg daily. They further advise that ephedra products not be used for more than 7 consecutive days.
